Billy Bob Thornton’s standout performance in Landman season 1 is a reminder to watch the actor’s other fantastic series currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video. Landman is the seventh scripted original series created by Sheridan, whose breakout series Yellowstone has sparked a wealth of Western-themed projects on Paramount+ from the acclaimed writer and director. Thornton leads the cast of Landman alongside Jon Hamm, Ali Larter, Michelle Randolph, Jacob Lofland, and Kayla Wallace.
Thornton was recently nominated for Best Performance by an Actor In A Television Series – Drama at the 2025 Golden Globes for his lead role in Landman as Tommy Norris. Tommy is a hard-working on-the-ground “crisis executive” for M-Tex, a profitable oil company owned by Hamm’s Monty Morris. Tommy has to wrangle all sorts of problems throughout Landman season 1, from oil rig explosions, threats from the Mexican cartel, pressures from Monty to think on his feet, and the endless yet loving stresses of his rowdy ex-wife Angela and their teenage daughter, Ainsley.

While not necessarily similar to Landman in terms of plot, Goliath is Thornton once again giving a great and commanding performance as a lead in a critically acclaimed television series. Thornton stars as Billy McBride, a disgraced lawyer and a man with alcohol addiction who also struggles with his ex-wife and teenage daughter. Goliath, which ran for 32 episodes across four seasons from 2016 to 2019, starts with Thornton’s Billy in a rough patch looking to build his life back both personally and professionally.
Some of the main characters in Landman season 1 make the new Taylor Sheridan series exceptional and highly entertaining, while others are frustrating.
Goliath is a legal drama developed by Jonathan Shapiro and David E. Kelly, the latter of whom has created dozens of films and TV series such as Ally McBeal, Big Little Lies, and the recent Apple thriller Presumed Innocent. Thornton leads the cast of Goliath which also includes William Hurt, Mark Duplass, Maria Bello, Bruce Dern, Molly Parker, J.K. Simmons, and Dennis Quaid. Goliath received an 86% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, compared to Landman season 1’s 75% critic score.

Considering the impressive 4-season run of Goliath, Landman will hopefully get just as long of a shelf life as Thornton’s previous successful streaming series, if not longer. While certain aspects of Landman have been divisive and even controversial, it has already generated a devoted fanbase, which has made it one of the most talked about new streaming series of the new year. With Yellowstone running for 53 episodes over five seasons, which had the potential to run for more had Kevin Costner not exited the series in 2023, Landman should aim to hit a 4-season run like Goliath, at the very least.
