Stranger Things star Finn Wolfhard has recounted the cast’s “unbelievably emotional” first readthrough of the series finale, describing what it was like to read the final episode together. Stranger Things season 5 will be bringing Netflix’s highly successful sci-fi horror drama to a close, as the core cast of characters prepare to face off against Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower) one last time. They will also be defending Hawkins from the Upside Down, which is starting to merge with the real world. The final season will consist of eight episodes, all of which will be released in 2025.
Speaking with Collider about the final season, Wolfhard recounted just how “unbelievably emotional” the first readthrough of Stranger Things‘ final episode proved to be for the whole cast. The actor, who portrays Mike Wheeler in the series, explained they read the episode without having looked it over before, making emotions run high during their reading. He also teased how “happy and excited” he is about the way the series ends, his statement a promising sign the series will offer a fitting conclusion. Check out what Wolfhard had to say below:
I read it with the cast and it was unbelievably emotional. We cold read it. We’d never read it before, so this was the first time we were all reading everything, and so it’s very overwhelming and really special. It was definitely one of those things that was much more emotional than I thought it was going to be. But I’m really happy about it and excited for it to come out.
What Stranger Things’ “Emotional” Series Finale Means For Season 5
The Show Will Deliver An Impactful, Memorable Ending
Stranger Things season 4 ended teasing plenty of danger ahead for the main group in Hawkins, with Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) and the core group watching a thunderous cloud encroach upon their town. Other stories will include what will happen to Max (Sadie Sink) after sustaining life-threatening injuries because of Vecna, alongside Eddie’s (Joseph Quinn) death still impacting the group. Wolfhard’s words tease the probability of these ideas getting addressed in emotionally hard-hitting ways, especially the stories of established characters who appear in the final episode.
From character deaths to the reveal of Eleven’s father, Stranger Things season 5 could go in some really wild directions based on these predictions.
The final season will also have plenty of surprises in store, including a lengthy 18-month time jump between seasons 4 and 5, alongside Linda Hamilton in a mystery role. Since Stranger Things‘ time jump will undoubtedly make events feel different from where season 4 left off, the series finale’s emotional scenes could be wildly unpredictable. However, it’s clear from Wolfhard’s statement the final episode leaves the story in an emotionally appropriate place to end, offering plenty of closure while still making for an impactful curtain call.

It Sounds Like It Will Have A Fitting Finale
Given the level of emotion Wolfhard is teasing for the series finale, it seems like the show will have a conclusion fitting for its decade-long impact on pop culture. Although it’s unclear what’s going to happen in the final episode, the actor’s testimony is a promising reflection of how the series will properly conclude, both for its story and its characters. A Stranger Things spinoff is also in the works from the Duffer brothers, set to go into production after the main series ends.
