Squid Game season 3 has confirmed that it will welcome back some of the most widely despised characters from the first season. Squid Game debuted on Netflix in 2021, and the show quickly racked up hundreds of millions of viewing hours due to the unique concept. The South Korean series follows a large number of people who find themselves down on their luck, struggling in debt, or generally aimless in life, who get a shot at winning an exorbitant amount of money to start over.
However, the games come with a high cost, with any players who fail or lose in a round being killed. Throughout Squid Game season 1, the why behind these games remained a complete mystery, until in episode 7, when the people behind the games first appeared on the screen. At this point, the numbers were already reduced from the original 456 players down to just 16, and the dark reality of the games was made abundantly clear.
Squid Game Season 3’s New Images Confirm The VIPs Are Returning
The VIPs Always Arrive Fashionably Late To The Squid Game
Evidently, the VIPs, a group of wealthy, predominantly white and English-speaking men, are the people these games are being hosted for. While the players get a shot at wealth beyond their imaginations, the VIPs are indulging in their baser instincts as they put money on the line to see people brutally murdered, or beginning to kill one another. And Squid Game season 3 appears to have confirmed the VIPs will return thanks to an early preview image of the Front Man sitting in the room where the VIPs observe the events live.
Squid Game season 3 could still see major players like Thanos return, despite the character meeting his end in the second season in a brutal fashion.
This room is decorated to look lavish, and like a jungle, where the VIPs, who cover their faces with golden animal masks, are surrounded by people who tend to their every whim. Some of these servers are the usual masked guards, while others appear with their entire bodies painted to resemble animals, or even furniture. And with the Front Man sitting in this room, it is safe to assume the VIPs will be back to witness the next round in Squid Game season 3.
Why The VIPs Were So Controversial In Squid Game Season 1
The VIPs Represent Absolute Evil & Greed
While the arrival of the VIPs did seem to clear up some of the mysteries established in season 1, their arrival led to some controversy. For one, these characters appear to predominantly be Americans. They are clearly shown to be the ultimate evil in the games, as they fund the horrific events, and indulge in gambling, drinking, and celebrating while the people playing go through what is certain to be the most traumatic thing in their lives, before 455 of them ultimately die.
The arrival of English-speaking American characters felt out of place in the series, but going deeper, the fact that these characters evidently stand for greed, injustice, cruelty, gluttony, and general evil, appears to be a very targeted and alienates a large part of the fanbase. While they are designed to be cartoonish caricatures of the evil rich white man, it is clearly conveying a message that portrays one group as victims, and another group as the perpetrators of cruelty and violence for the sake of greed. And for the audience, this message resonated with some, while causing offense and frustration for others.
The VIPs Are The Key To Bringing Down The Squid Games Forever
Gi-hun Needs To Find And Expose The VIPs
Regardless of whether the audience feels strongly about these characters and the message that they represent on a broader level, the VIPs are pivotal within the world of Squid Game. Gi-hun is on a mission to shut down the games for good, and by the looks of things, at the end of Squid Game season 2, things are not going terribly well. Gi-hun hoped to get access to the people controlling the games, like the Front Man, but the VIPs are the ones pulling the strings, whose requests and wishes the Front Man must adhere to.
Squid Game season 3’s release date has finally been confirmed by Netflix, which makes it hard not to believe it serves as the second part of season 2.
If Gi-hun really wants to take the games down, he will need to get access to the VIPs, and unmask them to reveal their despicable ways. Even in the privacy of the games, these individuals recognize that they cannot trust those in attendance, or each other, to keep their dirty secrets. If Gi-hun can find someway to turn the tables on the VIPs, expose their identities, and take the games out of the shadows, then there could still be hope for him to dismantle the games for good in Squid Game season 3.
