Kelvin Fletcher said he was once turned down by Coronation Street producers, before landing the role of Andy Sugden in Emmerdale.

The 41-year-old joined the Dales back in 1996 and left following a 20-year stint in 2016 to focus on other projects.

Addressing his soap past in conversation with Coronation Street’s Channique Sterling-Brown, Kelvin revealed he was rejected for a part on the Cobbles.

“I once auditioned for Corrie,” he spilled on his and wife Liz Fletcher’s Off Script… Coronation Street & Emmerdale podcast.

“It was actually for a little boy called Jamie who Jack Duckworth took under his wing, and I was down to the last two with Joe [Joseph] Gilgun.

“He obviously got the role, a year later I ended up in Emmerdale and the rest is history.

The role of Jamie Armstrong was played by Brassic star Joseph between 1994 and 1997.

He left the soap when the actress playing his on-screen mother stepped away, but later revisited the set in an ITV special titled The Kids from Coronation Street, in 2004.

While Kelvin was rejected for the role, he did manage to bag himself a smaller part during an episode in 1996.

Despite many calls to have him back on the soap, the actor seemingly has no plans to return.

Earlier this month, he dodged a question about making a comeback during a conversation with Emmerdale’s Nicola Wheeler, who plays Nicola King.

After admitting that he wasn’t happy with his on-screen daughter Sarah Sugden’s (Katie Hill) behaviour, Nicola suggested that he should return.

“I’m offering you a job Kelvin,” she said. “I’m in that position now at work, I’ve been there how many years? You can come back, have an affair with Nicola.”

Kelvin laughed off the suggestion and swiftly moved on to ask Nicola further questions about her character.

Alongside other acting roles since he left the soap, he has turned his focus onto professional racing driving and farming.

Alongside his wife in 2021, the pair bought a 120 acre plot of land in the village of Wincle, near Macclesfield in Cheshire.

Their farming efforts were initially filmed for BBC TV series, Kelvin’s Big Farming Adventure which aired in January 2022.

They have since moved on to front Fletchers’ Family Farm on ITV, as well as special Fletchers’ Family Farm at Christmas.
