Warning: SPOILERS ahead for High Potential season 1, episode 13!
High Potential showrunner Todd Harthan has addressed Gio’s “kinship” with Roman and what it means for season 2 after season 1’s big reveal. Gio (Domenick Lombardozzi) is an informant that has assisted Morgan (Kaitlin Olson) in the past, specifically telling her about Lila Flynn, an undercover FBI agent killed 15 years ago. However, he also appears to have a connection to the protagonist’s husband, Roman, who High Potential season 1’s finale revealed was still alive after also disappearing 15 years prior. Season 2 is set to continue exploring why he vanished.
Speaking with ScreenRant, Harthan explained how Gio’s “kinship” with Roman will be unpacked in High Potential season 2. The showrunner admitted he’s not sure how Lombardozzi’s character will be integrated into the next episodes, but he wants to bring him back because of the connection to Morgan’s husband already established. He also believes he can speak to Roman’s character, and the interactions between him and the protagonist will be an exciting way to continue the story. Check out what Harthan had to say below:
Yes, I think so. And he’s one of my favorite actors on the planet–Domenick Lombardozzi. I’ve worked with him a couple times, and I think that character has a lot more to say and is going to be potentially helpful in the next chapter of the Roman story in surprising ways. It’s on the board is one of those things where I go, “I don’t know how I’m going to use this key ingredient, the Gio character, again in season 2, but I love it and I think it will play in.”
There’s a moment at the end of one of the episodes where he says, “He was a good guy.” Gio essentially speaks to this man’s character, so I think there was a kinship with them before they split. Going back to the writer’s room, one of the things we also thought really got Gio to lean in was sitting across from Morgan and seeing the toughness and the spine of this woman, but also the vulnerability and the heartbreak of this woman.
I think it spoke to his humanity, and I think that’s why he helped too. So it’s just a complicated, interesting relationship. I love those two together. Kaitlin and Dom, the actor, are just wonderful together, so I think you’ll see more of it in season 2.
What Harthan’s Sentiments About Gio Means For Him In High Potential Season 2
The Character Will Return In An Important Capacity
Gio hasn’t had a massive role in the story so far, but his information did indicate a connection between Roman and Lila that hasn’t been fully explored yet. Since High Potential episode 13 provided important answers to the show’s larger mystery, it makes sense for the series to further explain how all three characters are connected in season 2. This is especially the case for the two who are still alive, since Morgan’s husband’s whereabouts are bound to become the central focus of the series when it returns.
Although Harthan doesn’t have particular plans for how Gio’s connection to Roman will be explored, season 1 laid the groundwork for his importance now that it’s confirmed he’s alive. The extent of his own knowledge of what happened to him and where he is could be the key to uncovering the truth, making him one of Morgan’s most important assets in High Potential season 2. Since his appearance so far indicates he knows more than he’s letting on, whatever information he has could finally lead to the conclusion of the main character’s search.
Our Take On High Potential Season 2’s Role For Gio
How Much Does He Actually Know?
Since Gio was cryptic about his connection to Roman the last time he spoke with Morgan, it’s unclear how much he actually knows about her husband’s current whereabouts. While the time frame between his disappearance and Lila’s murder means he might have some information, there’s also a possibility he doesn’t fully know where he is right now. High Potential has a chance to use the informant to their advantage, though, highlighting his connection to the main character’s husband with important revelations.
