High Potential Season 2: How the Show Maintains Its Quality with a Solid Storyline

Warning: this article contains SPOILERS for High Potential season 1, episode 10 (“Chutes and Murders”).With High Potential’s confirmed renewal, the final episodes of the pilot season are sowing seeds for future storylines. High Potential season 1, episode 10 (“Chutes and Murders”) followed Morgan (Kaitlin Olson) investigating the death of a nanny, but most suspects stood in contrast to Morgan, despite them all being “working moms.” Morgan took an extremely active role in her son Elliot’s (Matthew Lamb) life during High Potential episode 10 and comforted him when he was excluded by a classmate. Although heartbreaking, Elliot being ostracized could set up an exploration of Morgan’s past solitude in High Potential season 2.

Season 1 has given viewers plenty of reasons to watch High Potential already, but season 2 could offer something entirely new to keep the procedural fresh: glimpses into Morgan’s past. The closest High Potential has come to exploring Morgan’s backstory is discussing her ex-husband, Roman, and how his absence affected her daughter Ava (Amirah J). Whereas Ava is a typical teenage girl, High Potential has shown that Elliot prefers research to socializing. Morgan, who shares traits with both of her children, surely has a unique backstory that High Potential should explore.

High Potential Episode 10 Hints At Morgan’s Backstory

Morgan Tells Elliot She Was Different Too

When Morgan overhears Elliot’s classmate insulting him and confirming the rest of the class thinks he’s odd, she has an extreme reaction and sends the child outside to wait to be picked up. While the bulk of her anger understandably stems from her role as a mother, it’s likely Elliot’s High Potential episode 10 experience relates to Morgan’s past. As she tells her son, Morgan knows what it’s like to be “different” in High Potential. Since she and Elliot have displayed similar thought processes and personalities, Morgan’s childhood could have looked similar to Elliot’s— bullies and all.

High Potential has already shown Morgan to be misunderstood and looked down upon by members of society and even certain coworkers at the LAPD. Although Morgan is confident and unapologetic about her obscurity now, she’s probably been hardened by a lifetime of scrutiny and otherness. Even her partner Karadec (Daniel Sunjata) initially didn’t believe in her, though they’re a well-established team by episode 10. By diving into her backstory, High Potential can show the nuance of Morgan’s character and explain how she’s come to be the person she is.

High Potential Season 2 Allows For Enough Time To Fully Explore Morgan’s Arc

Understanding Her Past Will Make Her Present More Meaningful

Now that the procedural has been greenlit for season 2, High Potential has time to make its characters more detailed. Morgan and the LAPD ensemble can all have individual arcs and more distinct personalities with an entire second season and beyond. High Potential needs to solve its Roman mystery before introducing a new long-term conflict for Morgan, but High Potential season 1 has already left enough clues to set up a fitting resolution soon enough. After Roman’s case is solved, there’s more than enough to learn about Morgan as an individual.

High Potential season 2 will likely postpone a Morgan and Karadec romance, but exploring them both as independent characters will make their dynamic so much more interesting. Of course, Morgan is the main character of High Potential at the end of the day. Every character deserves their time in the sun, but season 2 should first and foremost worry about expanding Morgan’s character. Kaitlin Olson’s performance has been incredibly dynamic already, so adding more depth to Morgan in High Potential season 2 is the logical next step.
