Catherine Zeta-Jones is teasing a much darker storyline for Wednesday season 2, and it could be just what the hit Netflix show needs to stay fresh. Wednesday premiered way back in November 2022 and quickly became one of the streamer’s most popular original series. It’s taken a hot minute for the highly anticipated second season to come together — Wednesday season 2 is set to debut in 2025, although it still doesn’t have a confirmed release date — but that just means they’re taking their time to get it right.
As the season 2 premiere draws closer and closer, Jenna Ortega and the rest of the Wednesday cast are starting to drum up excitement for the next chapter of the series. When a show is as phenomenally successful as Wednesday, it can be tempting to just stick to the same formula — if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it — but that almost always leads to diminishing returns. Based on Zeta-Jones’ comments, it sounds like Wednesday season 2 will take the show down a darker path.
Wednesday Season 2 Will Be Bigger (But It Will Also Be Darker)
This Season Will Lean More Into The Horror
After season 1 brought a typical Y.A. drama to a school for supernatural teens, season 2 is taking a much darker turn. Zeta-Jones, who plays Morticia Addams in the series, has teased (via Netflix) that season 2 will be “bigger and more twisted than you can ever imagine.” The promise that season 2 will be “bigger” than its predecessor means it could go outside the gates of Nevermore Academy and explore a wider world. But the most tantalizing part of Zeta-Jones’ comment is that it’ll be “more twisted.”

In the opening scene of Wednesday, the title character tried to kill some of her classmates by unleashing hungry piranhas into a swimming pool containing her brother’s bullies. This set up a much darker series than it ended up being. The rest of season 1 was basically Gossip Girl with monsters. The second season can dig back into Wednesday’s sociopathic side.
Wednesday Must Find The Balance Between Action & Horror
It Can’t Turn Into A Blockbuster Spectacle Like Stranger Things
Ortega has said that every episode of Wednesday season 2 feels like a movie, and Zeta-Jones has promised that it’ll be a lot bigger than its predecessor. This is to be expected, given how successful season 1 was; it’ll probably be granted a much larger budget. However, that shouldn’t get in the way of the darker tone that they’ve been promising. Wednesday season 2 can have more action than season 1, but it shouldn’t go overboard with Stranger Things season 4 levels of action — it should still be a spooky horror show at its core.
