With Anora‘s numerous wins at the 2025 Oscars, the movie barely beats a record that only Walt Disney held before now. The Oscars season had tight competition, but a few of the films became frontrunners for the big awards – A Complete Unknown, Anora, and Emilia Pérez. Of the three, the one to come out on top is Anora, which won the most Oscars of 2025. The success of the film at the Oscars isn’t all that surprising, looking at the film’s success.
After the film’s release, Anora quickly garnered praise from both audiences and critics, holding a 93% and 89% on Rotten Tomatoes, respectively. The movie was praised for its gritty spin on the classic Cinderella story and the incredible performance by Mikey Madison. Although the movie was expected to succeed at the 2025 Oscars, the movie wasn’t expected to match, let alone exceed, one incredible record previously held by Walt Disney.
Sean Baker’s Wins For Anora Equals A Walt Disney Oscars Record
Sean Baker Won 4 Awards For Anora At the 2025 Oscars
Sean Baker personally received awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Editing due to Anora’s incredible success at the 2025 Oscars. The only other individual to gain the same number of Oscars in one go-round is the famous animator Walt Disney, who personally received four Oscars in 1954.
Bong Joon-ho is an honorary member of this group, as he should’ve gained the awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Feature Film at the 2020 awards. However, they technically gave the last award to South Korea for the film, not the director or writer. Because of that technicality, four awards to the same individual haven’t happened in 71 years.
Sean Baker Winning All Four Awards For Anora Actually Beats Walt Disney
Sean Baker & Walt Disney Have One Crucial Difference In Their Oscar Wins
Until now, Walt Disney was the only individual to gain more than three awards in one Oscars show. He and Sean Baker would be tied for the record if it weren’t for one major factor. When Walt Disney won his awards, it was across four different projects. He gained Best Documentary Feature for The Living Desert; Best Documentary Short Subject for The Alaskan Eskimo; Best Cartoon Short Subject for Toot, Whistle, Plunk and Boom; and Best Two-Reel Short Subject for Bear Country.
While I’m thoroughly impressed by that achievement, Sean Baker ultimately beat out Disney since he gained his awards all for the same project. This makes him one of the seven record-breakers at the 2025 Oscars. Considering it took 71 years for another person to win four awards in one show, it will undoubtedly be a long time before anyone beats Baker’s record for Anora.
