All American Season 8: Will Spencer’s Story Continue? Here’s What We Know So Far

The CW’s long-running sports drama All American is beginning a new era with the release of season 7, but will the show score a season 8 renewal? Debuting all the way back in 2018, the series originally followed an aspiring teen athlete, Spencer (Daniel Ezra), as he transfers from a high school in South L.A. to a school in Beverly Hills in order to pursue his sports dreams. Highlighting the drama of Spencer’s life both on and off the field, All American quickly became one of The CW’s crown jewel programs.

As the network began shedding most of its scripted programming in favor of cheaper-to-produce reality shows, All American managed to survive the purge while its spinoff, Homecoming, did not. However, All American found its budget slashed, and it underwent a massive overhaul before the debut of season 7. Though the original cast of All American is still around periodically, the drama has shifted to focus on a new group of teens. With the series essentially resetting itself, the future of All American is anything but certain. As such, season 8 has not been renewed by The CW yet.

The Showrunner Reveals Plans For All American Season 8

Though the series is still on the chopping block for now, the latest news confirms that plans are in place for All American season 8. Showrunner Nkechi Okoro Carroll spoke candidly about her hopes for the show’s future, and made it clear that season 7’s big reset is designed to lead to more seasons. “Listen, we’ve got plenty of stories to tell,” Carroll said emphatically, “our hope is that our amazing, wonderful fans who’ve been so loyal and great over the last six seasons will give this new cast a chance.

Listen, we’ve got plenty of stories to tell. We are hopeful for an eighth season. It’s why we introduced this new generation and sort of did a reset and took it back to the high stakes of high school football and high school love and all of that. My host producer hit me up, and he was like, “uh, so I just watched the first episode,” and I was like, “oh, my God, wait, don’t —” I was so worried he was about to be like, “we’ve got a problem,” but he was like, “I’m in love, I’m in awe, I’m excited” — and he’s been here since season one. So I was like, “phew,” and then I finally got the director’s cut and was able to watch it.

I’m so invested in these kids. I’m invested in Jordan and Layla’s marriage. I’m invested in Coop and these new friends she’s making. I’m so invested in the love triangles. I’m back to throwing my shoe at my TV and yelling at all the characters, so our hope is that our amazing, wonderful fans who’ve been so loyal and great over the last six seasons will give this new cast a chance as well because they truly are special

All American Season 8 Is Not Confirmed

The CW Hasn’t Renewed The Series Yet

it remains to be seen if fans will fall in love with the new characters with the same fervor that they did the originals.

Even though All American was almost always a shoo-in for renewal across its near-decade on the air thus far, season 8 is the first season that’s really in jeopardy. The sports drama managed to survive The CW’s scripted series purge that took down heavy hitters like Walker and Riverdale, but its future is anything but secured. The slashed budgets have resulted in a total reset of the main cast, and it remains to be seen if fans will fall in love with the new characters with the same fervor that they did the originals.

All American season 7 debuted on January 29, 2025.

If there is a dip in viewership in season 7, there’s little doubt that The CW will quickly pull the plug. However, if things remain the same, All American could stick around for a little longer after all. Regardless, it seems as if the sports drama is on its last leg, and historically, full cast resets haven’t been able to save faltering programs from cancelation. The CW has produced some outstanding shows over the almost two decades since it launched, but of the many shows in its library, these are the best.
