6 Ways Virgin River’s Future Could Take a Devastating Turn on Netflix and Turn Fans Away

Since the release of Virgin River in 2019, the Netflix show has garnered significant attention and praise from fans, while simultaneously catapulting the careers of the lead stars Alexandra Breckenridge and Martin Henderson. However, after the romantic drama dropped its latest season in December 2024, the show sparked headlines surrounding its plot.

Fans on social media thus started debating about the season 6 storyline and criticized certain aspects of the show. Calling it outright “insulting”, audiences pointed out the mess created by the latest season. Taking to Reddit, netizens thus came up with six significant reasons that might have ruined Virgin River’s potential for upcoming seasons on Netflix.

1 The cliche storyline about Mel’s real father and his weirdness

Although Virgin River had earned significant praise and attention with its five seasons, the latest installment seemingly ruined things for the show’s future on Netflix. From lazy writing to cliche plots, fans took to social media to point out a few of the grave disasters that took place in season 6. Well, among all, the most talked-about plot points in this season became the unexpected revelation about Mel’s real father.

While fans believe the show could have explored better plots, the creators surprisingly chose to fall back on the same old storylines that stink of melodrama and soap operas. And therefore, criticizing it as “just lazy, cliched storytelling”, Firm_Damage_763 went on to discuss Mel’s biological father, Everett Reid, and his strange personality that people found hard to connect with. While the “fake dad, real dad” trope was already quite boring and unnecessary, Everett’s weirdness simply added insult to injury.

2 The convoluted and unclear storyline about Mel’s mom and Everett

Moving on, fans pointed out the bizarre storyline surrounding Mel’s late mother Sarah, and her relationship with Everett. Stating how it felt quite confusing, netizens admitted to struggling with making sense of why Everett and Mel’s mom could not be a couple. Stating how there were no burdens or class disparity between the duo, Redditor claimed to wonder why the duo couldn’t be together.

Further, delving into Mel’s family history left viewers more perplexed than ever. Wondering why Mel’s mom even married another man, if she was deeply in love with Everett, AdPrevious6839 highlighted the complications created by Sarah, throughout the show. Further, pointing out how Everett was so bothered by the breakup that he wanted to end his life, Redditor questioned why he didn’t fight harder to keep Sarah with him.

3 The baseless feud between Vernon “Doc” Mullins and Everett

Believe it or not, fans are just starting on their long list of disappointments from Virgin River season 6, for the recently released installment seemed to go off track on logic and plot. Therefore, addressing another baseless storyline from the show, fans highlighted the sudden and unexplained feud between Vernon “Doc” Mullins and Everett that felt forced.

Fans believe the rift between the two men, which appears out of nowhere, lacks any proper backstory or explanation. Since it was revealed that the two characters were clashing all these years because Everett wanted to die and Doc saved him, which resulted in the loss of a young boy’s life while Doc was away, catering to Everett’s needs, netizens claimed that it was a trivial reason for holding a grudge over 30+ years.

4 The disappointing narrative between Cameron and Muriel

Another utterly failed storyline involved Cameron and Muriel, who were previously built up as an interesting couple. Despite initially starting as a great and unusual pairing, due to age differences, the writers of Virgin River season 6 seemingly pulled the plug on their promising romance just for the sake of drama. Instead of exploring their relationship in meaningful ways, the show relied on unnecessary and vain tropes.

While fans were expecting more emotional depth between the two characters, the show led Cameron to chase his alcoholic ex cause Muriel suddenly seemed too old to have kids. Therefore, he suddenly developed a preference for his alcoholic ex-girlfriend, who was his own age, over a great and a bit older woman, whom he loved and cherished all this while.

5. Denny and Lizzie’s boring storyline was a show killer

Another major disappointment for fans came in the form of Denny and Lizzie’s boring storyline. Admitting how they were never a point of interest for any viewer, Redditors mentioned that throwing the spotlight on the two characters and focusing on their lives just because they were expecting a child was completely unnecessary.

But sadly, despite being a secondary focus in the series, as Virgin River writers decided to make them integral to the storyline, it led many audiences to feel that their plotline was a “show killer”. Especially when Muriel was living the worst fate—suffering from a terminal illness like cancer, left by her partner since she was way past her childbearing age—fans claimed that Denny and Lizzie’s storyline could have easily been overlooked.

6 The unbelievable outcome of John ‘Preacher’ Middleton’s crime

Lastly, John “Preacher” Middleton’s storyline took a major hit in Season 6 with a crime narrative that many fans found hard to believe. Considering how he previously helped a woman bury the body of a cop she killed, fans had expected Preacher to get some sort of punishment for the aftermath of his crime.

However, shockingly, as Virgin River season 6 saw Preacher receive 300 hours of community service for the disposal of human remains, but no jail time as he’s cleared of the murder charge, it left fans utterly disappointed. The plot seemed outlandish, leading people to express their frustration over how the show’s overall integrity was dragged down by this singular moment.

And now, based on these above-mentioned disasters, fans wonder how Virgin River might fix these issues in the upcoming Season 7, and what more might be waiting for audiences in the next installment.
