Cobra Kai’s Composers Open Up About the Emotional Weight of Scoring the Final Episodes

Cobra Kai will wrap up its successful six-season run in February. While the series has featured some unexpected storylines, the show’s composers, Zach Robinson and Leo Birenberg, say the final episodes will take fans through a rollercoaster of emotions.

Speaking to Screen Rant, Robinson reflected on his time with Cobra Kai and how his work has mirrored the evolution of the series. “I’m not going to lie, it was pretty intimidating to watch those last 15 minutes of Season 6, Episode 10,” he said. “But I think we have grown so much as just composers and our writing has gotten better because this show has consistently pushed us every single year. You can’t say that about a lot of projects that you work on.”

“We have a lot of creative fulfillment from this show,” Robinson explained. “Personally, I look at what we just wrote in Season 6, I think about where I was at as a composer when we started Season 1, and if you showed me the fights we had to do in Season 6 seven years ago, I would’ve crumbled up into a ball and been like, ‘I’m not the person for this show.’ I don’t know if I’d be able to look at it and feel the same type of confidence that I have now. Not just confidence, but excitement.”

There’s stuff in the next block where we got really emotional writing it because it kind of mirrors our own journeys on this show – the growth and the experience and stuff,” Robinson added. Birenberg echoed the sentiment, saying, “Our growth as composers, I think, really mirrored the growth of the show. Back in 2017 when we started — I didn’t quite have the confidence to look at a project and be like, ‘Bam. This is exactly what this needs, and I know how to do it.'”

Cobra Kai Will End In Satisfying Fashion

Cobra Kai first hit screens in 2018, when the series premiered on YouTube Red/Premium. In 2020, after two seasons, Netflix acquired the series. The show sees Ralph Macchio and William Zabka reprise their respective Karate Kid roles as Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence. However, the series “re-examines the story from Johnny’s point of view, beginning with his decision to reopen the Cobra Kai karate dojo, and the rekindling of his old rivalry with Daniel,” the official synopsis reads.

In November 2024, Zabka promised a satisfying end to the series. “[This is] the right time to end it and the right way to end it,” he said. “[The producers] stick the landing in a way that’s unexpected, uplifting, and honest… It’s a great ending for everybody, and we’re so thankful we had six seasons to get to tell the whole story.” Cobra Kai also features Courtney Henggeler, Xolo Maridueña, Tanner Buchanan, Mary Mouser, Jacob Bertrand, Gianni DeCenzo, Peyton List, Vanessa Rubio, and Dallas Dupree Young.

Cobra Kai Season 6 Part 3 premieres on Netflix on Feb. 13.
